In 1886 it was opened a hotel in Luxor, built in British Colonial style and soon to become a legend. This was what today is called the Old Winter Palace. The first New Years Eve party had Crown Princes and Pricesses from Europe and Royal families from the Orient to the masked costume ball.
It was here Howard Carter himself announced for the first time the finding of the now so famous tomb of TutAnchAmon.
Luxor was a city famous for its dry climate and pleasent winter temperatures, and this hotel was the best place to stay. Of course Agatha Christie and Howard Carter, as Egypt's own Omar El Sherif - and the list goes on...
In the bar you can find old books to accompany your favourite drink before a dinner in the small gourmet restaurant 1886. The front terrace is facing the Nile and you can hardly find a better place to see the red sun going down behind the Valley of Kings on the other side of the flood. You will find very good swimming pools along with a children pool and the large exotic garden areas is as made for night strolls under the African moon.The grand entrance hall at Old Winter Palace tells its own story from the time Luxor was a place visited mainly by royals and nobility.
The hotel got 7 suites and 117 rooms, and the very special presidential suite in Victorian period style. The rooms are facing either the beautiful and large tropical garden or the Nile.
Old Winter Palace is more than a hotel, it's a monument among monuments.
